James P. “Jim” Cunningham, founder of our firm, passed away at the age of 85 on October 23, 2022. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he moved to Arizona in 1947 and went on to become one of the state’s most respected personal injury attorneys. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Jim embodied the spirit of advocacy, driven by an unwavering commitment to justice and compassion for others.
Jim was a lawyer for all the right reasons. When he was a student at the University of Arizona, a law professor told him and his class members: “Strive to be the best attorney you can be, and success will follow.” This message resonated with Jim, the eldest son of parents who had immigrated to the United States from Ireland. Possessed with a good mind and a strong Irish work ethic, Jim rose to prominence as one of the most successful personal injury attorneys in Arizona.
In 1989, Jim left a 22 lawyer firm he had created and established the Cunningham Law Firm. At this time he was joined by his son Matt who had graduated from the University of San Diego Law School. What most defined Jim as a lawyer was his compassion for his clients. If he told a client, “I’m going to help you,” he never gave up on their case, and gave them the same amount of effort and expenditure of resources no different than if they were a member of his own family.
Jim loved being a lawyer and saw the practice as virtuous. During court appearances, he commonly referenced Thomas Jefferson, the author of our Declaration of Independence, who said that of the three branches of government, the judiciary was the best because it was the people of the community who were making the decision as to what is just and fair through the jury process.
He used to say that as an attorney, “You’re the mouthpiece of your client. They don’t have the license or ability to argue their case in a courtroom. So, you have to reflect their sense of loss or suffering because you are their voice.”
As a certified personal injury and wrongful death specialist, Jim earned a reputation for standing up for the downtrodden, the injured, and the grieving—always fighting tirelessly on behalf of those in need. Whether securing record-breaking verdicts or dedicating his resources to support clients through their most challenging times, he approached every case with compassion, skill, and tremendous work ethic.
Jim’s devotion to the community extended well beyond his professional pursuits. Known for his unmatched generosity, he frequently supported charitable endeavors and never hesitated to assist those facing hardship or uncertainty. Guided by the principle that to whom much is given, much is expected, Jim demonstrated genuine kindness in every facet of his life, leaving a positive impact on countless individuals throughout Arizona.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Jim fostered a cultural legacy that lives on lives on in Phoenix. He led efforts to establish the first St. Patrick’s Day parade down Central Avenue in Phoenix, was instrumental in the development of the local Irish Cultural Center, and brought a spirit of celebration and heritage to the community he loved. His vision, compassion, and unwavering moral compass continue to guide our firm and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
